Johns Hopkins Continues Tradition of Innovation in Advanced Endoscopy

The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, continues its long tradition of innovation in advanced endoscopy with the addition of the E-View.AI image-guided endoscopy system from Omega Medical Imaging.

Internationally recognized for excellence in medicine, research, and education, Johns Hopkins has also established itself as a leader in the development and advancement of minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. Its Advanced Endoscopy Center provides highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic care while helping train the next generation of academic endoscopists in some of the field’s most advanced techniques.

The Johns Hopkins advanced endoscopy program encompasses a broad range of procedures, including ERCP, EUS and interventional EUS, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), luminal stenting, endoscopic ablation, enteroscopy, and third-space endoscopy. Its two-year advanced endoscopy fellowship combines extensive procedural experience with research and exposure to emerging technologies and techniques.

At the forefront of this work is Mouen Khashab, MD, Director of Therapeutic Endoscopy and Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Internationally recognized in interventional endoscopy, Dr. Khashab has helped advance minimally invasive approaches to the treatment of gastrointestinal and pancreaticobiliary disease.

Throughout his career at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Khashab has been closely associated with some of the most important advances in therapeutic and third-space endoscopy. He pioneered peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) in the United States for the treatment of achalasia and subsequently developed gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (G-POEM) as a minimally invasive treatment for gastroparesis. His work has also helped expand procedures including POEM with fundoplication (POEM-F), Zenker’s POEM (Z-POEM), interventional EUS, and endoscopic full-thickness resection.

Dr. Khashab has published more than 600 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and is a highly sought-after educator and speaker at advanced endoscopy programs around the world. In recognition of his contributions to the field, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy honored him with its Master Endoscopist Award in 2022.

Innovation extends beyond individual procedures at Johns Hopkins. The institution’s advanced endoscopy group maintains a strong focus on research, education, and the development of new technologies. The Johns Hopkins Laboratory for Endoscopy Advancement and Device Development supports the creation and evaluation of new endoscopic devices and techniques, while the program’s advanced fellowship exposes physicians to technologies and procedures not routinely available at most institutions.

The addition of Omega’s E-View.AI supports that continued commitment to advanced technology with an imaging system purpose-built for image-guided endoscopic procedures. Designed specifically around the requirements of ERCP and advanced GI, E-View.AI combines procedural imaging with Omega’s AI-enabled radiation reduction technology.

E-View.AI is the only ERCP fluoroscopy system proven to reduce radiation exposure by up to 84%, helping reduce exposure for physicians, clinical staff, and patients while maintaining the imaging and workflow required for complex procedures.

For a program that has played an important role in advancing what is possible through therapeutic endoscopy, the addition of E-View.AI represents another investment in technology designed specifically for the future of advanced endoscopic care.
